Bananas and chocolate chips are a classic combination when it comes to baking. I have tried using chocolate chips in different recipes, especially in cookies, like in these, Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies and Nutella Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies. But baking with healthy banana bread this time was a welcome change.
This is not my recipe. Straight forward talk here. I have tweaked a very popular recipe this time, and converted it into one healthy log of deliciousness. When I say that this is insanely delicious, I really, really mean it! The banana bread was finished in a single day. I have baked banana bread earlier, but stumbled on this recipe lately by Tasty. It was apparently very popular recipe of theirs, and it didn’t disappoint me at all.
It is very apparent from the banana bread pictures that my daughter left me no time to get any classic shots of the final bake. But I don’t blame her, the bread was incredibly inviting. The gooey and melted chocolate chips of the banana cake just hot out of the oven says it all. So, please don’t mind the weird photography, but it was simply irresistible!
Coming to the chocolate chips used, I have used Hershey’s semi-sweet chocolate chips, and they impart the perfect sweetness here. Those who follow my posts know my love for Trader Joe’s Chocolate Chips, but this time since I didn’t have those in my pantry, I decided to give the Hershey’s chocolate chips a try, and, I love them, definitely recommended!
How is this Banana Jaggery Cake Healthy?
The changes I made to the original recipe are pretty simple to follow. I have replaced all purpose flour with whole wheat flour in equal proportion. Next, the sugar mentioned in the recipe has been replaced with jaggery powder. The recipe mentions 3 bananas and 1 egg to be used. But I had only 2 bananas available in my pantry, so I used 2 bananas and 2 eggs here. Rest of the ingredients remain the same.
I had a feeling that the chocolate chips seem less for the bread, but I was wrong, the quantity of chocolate chips used is perfect. Half a cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips plus two extra tablespoons for sprinkling is able to suffice here. So, I strongly recommend you to use the same quantity.
Healthy baking has been the essence of this blog, and if you see the desserts category of the blog, I have always insisted everyone to reduce the use of refined flour and refined sugar. These are really harmful for our bodies, and their negative effects are now known to everyone.
This is the reason I try my bakes using different kinds of healthy flours, like whole wheat flour, oatmeal, chickpea flour, finger millet flour etc. Also, I have now switched completely to healthy sweeteners like jaggery powder and unrefined cane sugar. I would recommend everyone to start bringing this change to their kitchens, your body will definitely thank you for this!

The process of making the healthy chocolate banana bread is very simple, as explained below.
Method (Step-by-step with pictures)
- Preheat oven to 350 degree F. Meanwhile, mash the bananas in a bowl until smooth. Add the melted butter to the mashed bananas and again mix it thoroughly. Add in the unrefined cane sugar/jaggery powder, eggs, vanilla essence, baking soda, salt and whole wheat flour.
- Mix everything till all the ingredients are uniformly mixed. Finally add the half cup of chocolate chips, and give it a good mix.
- Grease a 9″ x 5″ loaf pan with some butter and dust with whole wheat flour. Add in the banana bread batter into the greased pan, and top it with rest of 2 tablespoon of chocolate chips. Remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool before serving.
