Healthy chocolate chip cookies love is now on another level with this copycat DoubleTree chocolate chip cookie recipe (but healthier) of the famous DoubleTree Chocolate Chip Cookies. I think almost everyone who has tasted these cookies is a big big fan of those.
The Inspiration
I have not had the privilege of tasting those cookies till now, my bad. But, thanks to DoubleTree Hotel By Hilton for releasing the official recipe of their famous cookies, for spreading some happiness during this tough pandemic time. Here is what they said in their official recipe release (Source: DoubleTree By Hilton), and I am sure they did touch many hearts with this sweet gesture!
“We know this is an anxious time for everyone. A warm chocolate chip cookie can’t solve everything, but it can bring a moment of comfort and happiness.”
Shawn McAteer, senior vice president and global head, DoubleTree by Hilton
I was introduced to these cookies by my sister-in-law. As always, she gives me the best of ideas for my blog, and her baking skills are just amazing. She had tried these cookies at DoubleTree, and told me about their official recipe release. It has been almost a month that I have them on my list of “Recipes To Try”, but I finally got a chance to bake them this week.
I have basically halved the original recipe here. One reason being I have one baking sheet for now, and second being I wanted to try out a smaller batch first. Knock knock, I have done some bad baking experiments too. They were edible, but not so easily edible, LOL! So, it was a must to try out a smaller batch.
How are these cookies Better Than DoubleTree Chocolate Chip Cookies?
I have followed the recipe directions as is. The only major change that I have made to this recipe is replacing White Flour with Whole Wheat Flour. And second is replacing the White Granulated Sugar & Brown Sugar in the recipe with Jaggery Powder.
I would say the cookies are a bit healthier than the original ones here, but trust me, these healthier ones taste great too! I have a lot of chocolate chip cookies on my blog. But never have I ever baked cookies at such a lower temperature. And never have I ever whisked the dough so much. Most of the cookie recipes just require the ingredients to be folded together, unlike this one where the wet ingredients are whisked for a long time. Also, I like the generous use of chocolate chips and chopped walnuts in the recipe. It really helps to bring out the flavors to the maximum.
I didn’t have the Nestle Toll House Semi-sweet chocolate chips (as I have a big bag of Kirkland ones from Costco to finish as of now (and to be honest, I love the Kirkland ones too). But if you want to keep the chocolate chips taste intact (as the original recipe), then I would suggest you to try it with Nestle Toll House chocolate chips. Otherwise, you can just try this recipe with whatever chocolate chips you have available.
Most of the cookies recipes in this blog have been created more or less using one recipe as the base. Linking that base recipe of Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Cookies for your reference.
How to make Healthier & better than DoubleTree Chocolate Chip Cookies
Making Whole Wheat & Jaggery Powder DoubleTree Cookies is a simple process, as explained here. Note that I don’t use any electric hand mixer to prepare the cookie dough. You can make the dough using a hand whisk for an even texture of the cookie dough (I have specified timings for whisking the dough in both cases, using hand whisk and second is using an electric whisk/stand mixer). If you want to follow the original recipe, ingredients and directions, here is the original recipe as posted by DoubleTree. As for this healthier version, here is the step-by-step process that I followed.
- Cream the butter and jaggery powder till the jaggery powder is completely blended with the butter. I used to earlier use softened butter for my cookies, but this one is very soft, not melted butter, but way too soft.
- Add in the egg, lemon juice and vanilla extract and again stir everything.
- Add in whole wheat flour, ground oats, baking soda, salt and cinnamon to the wet mixture and mix everything together carefully, don’t over-mix at this stage.. Finally add the chocolate chips and chopped walnuts and mix them evenly in the dough.
- Line a baking tray with cookie sheet or parchment paper. Preheat oven to 300 degree F. Take around 2-3 tbsp of dough in your hands, form a ball, and place on the baking tray, and flatten the cookie dough balls a little.
- Bake the cookies for around 20-25 minutes in the preheated oven until edges are golden brown and center is still soft.
Tools & Equipment Used
- Cuisinart 14-Cup Food Processor (For pulsing the Oats to make Oats Flour)
- Pyrex Glass Mixing Bowls Set
Also, continuing the tradition, here comes the 46th recipe under My Julie & Julia Project. For those who don’t know, I had started this project last year, under which I had planned to post 100 recipes from my kitchen by the end of the year 2019. But since I got busy with other priorities in life, I have planned to continue the tradition in 2020. So, this is the Recipe #46 for you all.

Healthy DoubleTree Cookies Method (Step-by-step with pictures)
- Cream the butter and jaggery powder till the jaggery powder is completely blended with the butter, do this for almost 3-4 minutes using hand whisk (If you are using electric hand mixer or a stand mixer, you can do this process on medium speed for around 2 minutes).
- Add in the egg, lemon juice and vanilla extract and again mix everything using hand whisk for 3-4 minutes (For electric hand mixer or stand mixer, do it at medium speed for 2 minutes).
- Add in whole wheat flour, oats flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon to the wet mixture and mix everything together carefully for around 1 minute using hand or hand whisk (For electric hand mixer or stand mixer, do it on low speed for around 45 seconds).
- Finally add the chocolate chips and chopped walnuts and mix them evenly in the dough, don’t over-mix at this stage.
- Line a baking tray with parchment paper. Preheat oven to 300 degree F.
- Take around 2-3 tbsp of dough in your hands, form a ball and place on the baking tray. Flatten the balls a little if you want thinner cookies (Highly recommended, I didn’t flatten them but flattening would give you better results). Repeat this step for all the cookies. I was able to make 10 cookies with the dough as I took close to 3 tbsp dough for each cookie. You can even make a little smaller sized cookies, the number of cookies will increase then.
- Bake the cookies for around 20-25 minutes in the preheated oven until edges are golden brown and center is still soft (I would recommend to start checking for doneness at 20 minutes).
- Remove the cookies from the oven, and allow them to cool for at least an hour.
The Healthier DoubleTree Chocolate Chip Cookies are now ready to be served. Also, these can be stored in an air-tight container.
