Healthy Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies
Fall in love with the healthy and delicious Quaker Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies, sweetened with unrefined cane sugar, combined with the irresistible chocolate chips and chopped walnuts. I bet you can’t have just one!
Chocolate Chip Cookies have been the essence of my blog. I have baked the Chocolate Chip Cookies with whole wheat flour, but this time I decided to give it a shot with the healthy and gluten free flour, Oatmeal. I have prepared the flour using Old fashioned Quaker Oats box that I had in my pantry, which I generally used for making overnight oats for breakfast.
Oatmeal is one of the healthiest flours you can incorporate into your diet. It is not only super nutritious, but super filling as well. So less calories, and more health, not to forget that you can use it in a variety of ways in your diet. Our favorite ways are cookies and pancakes.
I had shared the recipe of Oatmeal Raisin Cookies sometime back, where I had used 3/4th cup of Oatmeal with 1 cup of whole wheat flour. Now I plan to slowly increase the ratio of Oatmeal to whole wheat in my cookie experiments. For this particular recipe, I have swapped the numbers, 3/4th cup of whole wheat and one cup of oatmeal it is. Hopefully the next recipe will have a drastic change of the ingredients, fingers crossed!
When you are baking with gluten free flours, you have to take care of increasing the amount of moisture or leavening agent since these cookies tend to be dry or crumbly because of lack of gluten (since gluten is the protein which helps to bind the cookies like a glue). The baking powder quantity has been increased here to take care of that.
Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookies
As I always say, the recipe of Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies that I had baked has been the base recipe for many of my bakes. Here also, I am using the same recipe as a base and creating this new one.
I have added roughly chopped walnuts here. I like crushing the walnuts in mortar and pestle, as I love the uneven chopped texture that it gives to walnuts. You can even use a food processor to chop the walnuts. Powdered walnuts is also an option, but I would recommend the roughly chopped ones for this recipe.
Also, continuing the tradition, here comes the 27th recipe under My Julie & Julia Project. For those who don’t know, I had started this project last year, under which I had planned to post 100 recipes from my kitchen by the end of the year 2019. But since I got busy with other priorities in life, I have planned to continue the tradition in 2020. So, this is the Recipe #27 for you all.
Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookies
I always prefer to refrigerate the cookies that have Chocolate Chips in them, since the chocolate chips tend to be in a soft, gooey state when taken just out of the oven. Once the cookies are cooled to room temperature (after taking them out of the oven), it is better to refrigerate them for half an hour or so. But I do agree that these cookies taste out of the world when eaten warm, just out of the oven. YUMM!

Now let’s take you straight to the Healthy Quaker Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe!
Healthy Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup Butter unsalted, softened
- 3/4 cup Unrefined cane sugar
- 1 Egg
- 1 tsp Vanilla Essence
- 3/4 cup Whole wheat flour
- 1 cup Oatmeal/Oats flour I made it by grinding Quaker Oats in food processor
- 1/2 tsp Baking soda
- 1 tsp Baking powder
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1/2 cup Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips I have used Trader Joe's Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips here
- 1/2 cup Walnuts chopped roughly, I used Mortal & Pestle for this
Instructions
- Mix the butter and unrefined cane sugar till the sugar is completely blended with the butter. I prefer to mix by hand since I don't use mixer. Whisk or spatula is not helpful in this case, since the butter is not in a completely melted state.
- Add in the egg to this mixture. Now add vanilla essence to the above mixture and stir till all the ingredients are uniformly mixed. The wet ingredients mixture is now ready.
- For the dry ingredients, mix in oats flour, whole wheat flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt to the wet mixture.
- Finally add the chocolate chips and chopped walnuts, and give it a good mix with hand. It is advisable to chill the dough in the refrigerator for at least an hour.
- Remove the cookie dough from the refrigerator and let it come to the room temperature (for at least 15 minutes).
- Preheat oven to 375 degree F.
- Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- Take around 1-2 tbsp of dough in your hands, form a ball, and flatten a little. I was able to make 15 cookies with the prepared dough.
- Bake the cookies for around 15-17 minutes in the preheated oven, or till you see creases on top of the cookies. The cookies will be soft to touch, but once cooled, they will be fine. It took me exactly 17 minutes to bake them to the right texture.
- Remove the cookies from the oven, and allow them to cool for at least 5-10 minutes.
- The Healthy Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies are now ready to be served warm or these can be stored in an air-tight container for 5-7 days!
Notes
- Whole Wheat Flour β Feel free to replace whole wheat flour with the same quantity of all-purpose flour. If the cookie dough feels a little loose, add ~ 1/4th cup more of all-purpose flour.
- Unrefined Cane Sugar β If Unrefined Cane Sugar is not available, you can replace it with equal amount of refined sugar.
- Egg β To make the recipe eggless, I would advise to replace the egg with either of these two options:
- Chia Seed Gel (Mix 1 Tbsp powdered Chia seeds with 3 Tbsp water, and let it soak for 5 minutes)
- Flax Seed Gel (Mix 1 Tbsp powdered Flax seeds with 3 Tbsp water, and let it soak for 5 minutes)
Method (Step-by-step with pictures)

Any other option for eggless cookies as I donβt hv bananas
Kanwaldeep Kaur
For eggless version, you can use flaxseed gel or chia seed gel (1 tbsp flaxseed/chiaseed + 3 tbsp water) or one mashed banana as egg replacer. I havenβt particularly tried replacing egg in this recipe, but this is the standard replacement of egg in a cookie recipe!! Do try π
Sarojini
hi i made these cookies today. i had to add an extra 1/4 cup wheat flour and oat flour to get to a dough consistency. Cookies were tasty. Any method to make them crispy? they are soft in the center.
Kanwaldeep Kaur
Thank you so much Sarojini for trying out the cookies. Yes since the cookies are on a softer side, the dough can be difficult to handle and you might need to add some extra flour. But I am glad you liked the taste. Regarding crunchy cookies, if you lessen the butter/egg (the wet ingredients) and also bake at a lower temperature for a longer time, the cookies become crunchy. I havenβt tried this myself but do let me know if it works for you next time. Thank you once again for trying ππ
