Ingredients & Substitutes
- Banana
Banana is the hero ingredient of this recipe, since we are making Overnight Oats with banana, so no substitute for this. But if you are still looking to avoid, then you can replace it with mango or strawberries.
- Rolled Oats
I am using old fashion rolled oats by Quaker Oats here. I would not recommend steel cut oats. Also, you can use certified gluten free oats if you are looking for a gluten free option.
- Milk
I am using whole milk here, but feel free to substitute it with the milk of your choice, like almond milk, oat milk etc.
- Yogurt
Yogurt gives the overnight oats a creamier texture. But you can skip it if you like, just replace it with milk of your choice. But I love to use it for the texture it provides. I am using whole milk yogurt, you can also use plain Greek yogurt or any other flavored yogurt of your choice.
- Honey
Honey adds to the sweetness in the recipe. You can skip it if you like, and also, you can substitute it with maple syrup.
- Ground Cinnamon
Talking of the Overnight Oats recipe, we can’t forget the best flavor companion in terms of spices for banana, which is none other than Cinnamon. Ground cinnamon adds that fresh sweet and spicy balanced flavor to the oats here. Feel free to skip it if you don’t like it’s flavor.
- Chia Seeds
Chia seeds helps in imparting the creamy luscious texture to the overnight oats, along with providing a lot of nutritious value. Chia seeds are a good source of protein, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, iron and antioxidants.
- Vanilla Extract
A dash of vanilla extract is definitely an optional ingredient, but nonetheless, my favorite. A hint of vanilla extract takes the flavor of overnight oats to a next level.
What size Mason jar is best for Overnight Oats?
Any glass mason jar between 8 ounces to 16 ounces (8oz-16oz) works best for overnight oats recipes. I have used a 12 ounce glass jar here in this recipe, I feel 12 oz provides good enough space to hold overnight oats and also add extra toppings in the morning, if you want to eat straight out of the jar.
How to make Overnight Oats With Banana
- In a 12 oz glass jar, add all the ingredients. Mix well and refrigerate overnight.
- In the morning, enjoy the oats straight from the jar, or in a bowl.
- Optionally, add toppings of your choice. I used sliced banana, raspberries and sliced almonds.
- No fuss, easy and quick meal prep breakfast is ready. Works great for hectic morning meals, perfect for busy moms!
Notes
- I have used a 12 oz glass jar here in this recipe, but you can use a smaller or bigger jar as per your convenience. I have found 12 oz to be the perfect size for a single serving of Overnight Oats.
- A wide mouthed glass jar is a better version for Overnight Oats than a curved glass jar from the top. The wide mouth makes it easier to directly eat from the jar itself.
Additional Toppings
- Fruits (Strawberries, Blueberries, Blackberries, Apples, Mango, Nectarines etc.)
- Nuts (Walnuts, Hazelnuts, Brazil Nuts etc.)
- Seeds (Sunflower, Hemp seeds etc.)
- Nut Butters (Almond Butter, Cashew Butter, Hazelnut butter etc.)
- Flaxseed Powder
- Semi-Sweet/Dark Chocolate Chips
- Raisins, Dried Cranberries
