Finally, I baked again! The last few days have been serious testing times. For all of us, but especially for those who cannot avoid being at home. All those essential workers, who are risking their lives everyday, just to help us be comfortable at home, or to take care of us in sickness. Coronavirus aka Covid-19 is definitely going to be etched in everyone’s hearts.
There are moods everyday, good moods, bad moods, sometimes feeling bad for the kids locked at home, sometimes feeling bad for all those people whose lives have been suddenly hit hard. But as always, I know that, “This too shall pass!”.
I hope we all learn something good out of this time. And grow as persons, who are healed, who are no more running in the rat races. I hope we all slow down and appreciate what all nature has given us. I hope that the earth becomes beautiful again. It needed to breathe, and it is doing so right now. I hope this struggle (especially for people who are risking their lives everyday) ends soon.
Enough of hopes I guess. Well, I had to get back to the love of my life (baking) once again, this time planned well with the ingredients available at hand. So, the long pending wish of using Ragi flour, again got shape in the form of these cookies.

Health Benefits of Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Ragi Cookies
Before we jump to the main recipe, I want to tell you about the health benefits of Finger Millet flour. Ragi is considered as a very nutritious choice in cereals, as it is an excellent source of calcium, iron and dietary fibre, among others.
Oatmeal also has it’s own set of benefits. It is not only nutritious, but a very filling food as well. Also, there is no refined flour used in this bake (just like with all my other bakes). I use whole wheat flour in most of my bakes. And on the same lines, there is no refined sugar used here, instead I have used jaggery powder.
There is another benefit of Ragi which many of the ladies reading this post might love the best. Because of the presence of antioxidants, Ragi is a considered as a great anti-ageing agent.
Getting back to the recipe, I think most of you might already know about the popularity of Whole Wheat Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies. So many people have tried that recipe, and everyone have loved the results. It has even been a great quarantine activity for kids these days. Many moms are happy with the ease with which these can be prepared. That recipe is going to get a new makeover today with the addition of Ragi and Oatmeal Flour.

Without taking more time of yours, let me take you straight to the recipe of insanely delicious Ragi Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies!
Ragi Oats Cookies Method (Step-by-step with pictures)
- Preheat oven to 375 degree F.
- Meanwhile, mix the butter and the jaggery powder till the jaggery powder is completely blended with the butter. I prefer to mix by hand since I don’t use mixer. Whisk or spatula is not helpful in this case, since the butter is not in a completely melted state.
- Add in the egg and vanilla essence to this mixture and stir till all the ingredients are uniformly mixed.
- The wet ingredients mixture is now ready.
- For the dry ingredients, add whole wheat flour, finger millet flour (Ragi), oatmeal, baking soda, baking powder and salt to the wet ingredients and mix everything together.
- Finally add the chocolate chips and give it a good mix with hand. The dough will be a little loose at this stage, so it is advisable to put the dough in the fridge for at least 20-30 minutes.
- Line a baking tray with parchment paper. Take around 1-2 tbsp of cookie dough and roll into a ball. Then flatten the dough ball and place on the baking tray. I was able to make 16 cookies with the prepared dough.

- Once the oven is preheated, bake the cookies for 12-15 minutes (Mine got baked properly in 15 minutes).
- Remove the cookies from the oven, and allow them to cool for at least 5-10 minutes.

Enjoy the Finger Millet (Ragi) Oatmeal Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Cookies warm just out of the oven or these can be stored in an air-tight container for around 1-2 weeks!!

Notes
- Whole Wheat Flour – Feel free to replace whole wheat flour with the same quantity of all-purpose flour. If the cookie dough feels a little loose, add ~ 1/4th cup more of all-purpose flour.
- Jaggery Powder – If Jaggery Powder is not available, you can replace it with equal amount of refined sugar.
- Egg – To make the recipe eggless, I would advise to replace the egg with either of these two options:
- Chia Seed Gel (Mix 1 Tbsp powdered Chia seeds with 3 Tbsp water, and let it soak for 5 minutes)
- Flax Seed Gel (Mix 1 Tbsp powdered Flax seeds with 3 Tbsp water, and let it soak for 5 minutes)

Can we use flax seed instead of egg
Kanwaldeep Kaur
Hi Pooja! Definitely. For eggless version, you can use flaxseed gel or chia seed gel (1 tbsp powdered flaxseed/chiaseed + 3 tbsp water). I haven’t particularly tried replacing egg in this recipe, but this is the standard replacement of egg in a cookie recipe!! Do try 👍
