Apples and cinnamon, these two flavors are definitely made for each other. While Apple Pie is the first dish that pops up into our mind when we talk about these two ingredients, the next best option that comes to mind is the Apple Cake, the perfect winter dessert.
This apple cinnamon cake is a quick and easy one bowl cake recipe, which is both refined flour free and refined sugar free. This one is a whole wheat jaggery cake, which is egg free, and uses yogurt in place of egg which imparts the structure and texture to the cake.
Ingredients & Substitutes
- Apples
Apples are the star of the recipe. I have used Red Delicious apples to make this cake, but feel free to use any apple variety that you like.
- Jaggery Powder
Jaggery is an unrefined form of sugar, which comes from sugarcane or sap of palm, and retains it’s nutrients during processing. So using Jaggery Powder for baking is healthier as compared to the refined sugar. If Jaggery Powder is not available, you can replace it with equal amount of Organic Coconut Sugar.
- Whole Wheat Flour
Whole wheat flour or Atta is a better substitute to the refined flour that is normally used in baking. There is definitely no compromise on the taste of baked goods made with whole wheat flour.
- Vegetable Oil
I have used Avocado Oil in this recipe. It is a great option for high heat cooking and baking. But feel free to use any neutral flavored oil here.
- Yogurt
Yogurt is used as a substitute to egg in this recipe here. I have used the plain whole milk yogurt, but feel free to replace it with plain Greek yogurt.
- Ground Cinnamon
Apples and cinnamon are a perfect “made for each other” combination. Ground cinnamon has a strong distinctive flavor which imparts the right level of warmth and earthiness to the cake. For a stronger flavor, you can add half a teaspoon more of the ground cinnamon.
- Other Ingredients
The rest of the ingredients in this recipe include baking powder, baking soda, salt and vanilla essence.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use eggs to replace yogurt in this recipe?
Yes. Feel free to replace the yogurt in this recipe with 4 eggs.
What does yogurt do in a cake?
Yogurt provides moisture to the cake which makes it soft and moist. It also imparts tanginess to the cake. Apart from that, the acidity in yogurt activates baking soda added in the recipe, which makes the cake light and fluffy.
Can I make this cake vegan?
To make a vegan apple cinnamon cake, you can substitute yogurt in the recipe with a non-dairy yogurt, in 1:1 ratio. To know about which nondairy yogurt to use, here is an article by Epicurious, where they have tested almost 10 brands of plant-based yogurts for baking.
What kind of apples can I use for this cake?
I would say you can simply use any kind of apples available at hand. I have used Red Delicious apples here, but feel free to use any kind of apples available with you. If you use tart apples, you might need to adjust the level of sweetness in the recipe, otherwise any medium sized apples would do just fine here.
What can I use instead of a loaf pan?
I have used a standard loaf pan measuring 8 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches here. The amount of batter it can hold is around 6 cups. Instead of the loaf pan, you can use an 8×2 inches round cake pan.

Meenakshy
Can you use milk instead of yogurt?
Kanwaldeep Kaur
Hi Meenakshy. I would suggest that in place of milk, you can use Buttermilk as the substitute. The recipe uses 1 cup Yogurt, you can replace that with 3/4 cup Buttermilk. Hope it helps!
